All-Access Hour with Bianca Andreescu

“I realised that I truly love the sport”

Stuttgart. Bianca Andreescu, the former world No. 4 and 2019 US Open winner took time off at the start of the season to take care of her mental health. The Canadian is now celebrating her comeback on the WTA Tour. She spoke about...

…her return to the WTA Tour at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix:
"I am very excited to play again and am looking forward to my first tournament. The last couple of months have been difficult but I just felt that my time off was enough. I got bored of not challenging myself on the court. I really missed the fire I had competing. That was kind of like the point where I felt it was time to start playing again.”

…her mental state after her time off:
"I feel much better now. I think I learned a lot about myself and the people around me. I’ve developed a stronger passion for this game. I realised that I truly love the sport.”

…her physical shape ahead of her comeback:
“I feel really great. I’ve had an amazing pre-season of about seven weeks. It normally only lasts four. So it’s nice to take that time to get back into shape. I’m actually very happy with how quick I got my rhythm back.”

…the indoor clay court in the Porsche Arena:
“I played indoor clay as a junior and I played some ITF tournaments and I really like it. I think it fits my game style. I like that it’s a bit faster than the regular clay at the French Open.”

…the path back to top form:
“My goal right now is just to enjoy myself and give the best that I can and prepare the best way I can for the French Open. I’m not really thinking about results like I did in the past. But I don’t want it to take a whole year til I start playing my best tennis again.”

...her four-and-a-half months away from tennis:
"I wanted to get a lot of stuff out of the system, just to be a regular 21-year-old spending as much time with family and friends. On Tour, you don’t really have the opportunity all the time. I was playing Call of Duty and NBA which was fun. My trip to Costa Rica helped me. It was good to just get away from the tennis world. I was in my own bubble of yoga and meditation, all that hippie stuff that I love. I hope I can bring some stuff on Tour with me and I think it will really help me sustain my mental health.”
